The competition involved three sections: the Blitz, Bull’s-Eye and Co-op. The Blitz was a ‘lightning-fast’ individual round, where competitors answer 26 questions in only 40 minutes. The Bull’s-Eye, with 12 questions divided into 3 different groupings, focuses on quality over quantity. The final round, the Co-op, has competitors work together to solve 15 demanding problems.
The exciting annual Math Challengers competition was held at UBC on Saturday, February 23. At this event, thirty seven determined Wolves led by Mr. Ito tested their mathematical mettle.
After each round, we reconvened to share and debate our answers. We delighted in the answers we’d got right (according to our friends) and despaired about the ones we’d got wrong.
We then broke for lunch, braving torrential rain to enjoy all sorts of food from fried chicken to bento boxes.
In the afternoon came the Face-Off, where the top 10 scorers from each grade competed in a trivia-style game. At around 3:30, we headed home, tired but happy from a long day of competing.
While our team didn’t win the competition this year, the event was successful and fun: we got to do math problems that stretched our brains to the limit, and bonded over the difficult questions and enjoyable experiences that we shared.
The Math Challengers competition was a success thanks to the hard work and preparation of Mr. Ito, and the practice time our team had put in every Friday since November.
