Winter Cultural Week was such a wonderful time. Between Monday and Friday, December 16th to 20th, students enjoyed an immersive cultural experience at school lunch times.
On Tuesday, the whiteboard was brought into the lobby with the question, “How do you celebrate Winter?” on it. Awesome answers like family dinners, Secret Santa activities, and more quickly populated the board. It was really fun reading and putting my own responses up there. During lunch, there were dreidel games that were a huge success! Students won delicious prizes while learning about Jewish culture at the same time. Each of its faces featured Hebrew letters each corresponding to a unique action. Gambling away our chocolates, we learned about the traditional game of “Rejoicing:”
On Thursday, intercultural club leaders presented a food exposition of dishes from various cultures that took place in the UCCC. The opportunity to taste international cuisines of Jewish and Western cultures, from the Philippines, and more all from the comfort of the school grabbed the attention of numerous students. The exposition was a huge success, with all the food cleared out in around 15 minutes. We were able to learn about the history of the diffusion of different cultures to Vancouver, often through immigration, a process that took place over hundreds of years and that dramatically changed our traditions today.
Ultimately, the week before Christmas break saw various demonstrations of different cultures, from fun games to delicious treats. Students were able to not only learn about different cultures with friends but also experience them as well.
Keep an eye out for more Intercultural Club activities so you too can explore and enjoy different cultures.
