In the year since ChatGPT burst onto the scene, the ripples of its debut have spread far beyond its initial splash. As we mark its first anniversary, it’s time to reflect on how this AI phenomenon has reshaped our interactions, our queries, and even our creativity. From students leveraging it for essays to programmers for code, ChatGPT has become a fixture in our digital lives, prompting us to reconsider the boundaries of technology and human ingenuity. In this reflection, we’ll explore the myriad ways ChatGPT has influenced our world, for better or for worse, in its whirlwind first year.
As the months have slipped by, ChatGPT has etched itself into the fabric of daily life with the quiet persistence of a New England mist. It’s become a companion for the lonely and a tool for the inspired, a silent partner in the dead of night when the rest of the world sleeps. It’s not just about the words it weaves, but the doors it opens—into the labyrinth of our thoughts, fears, and dreams. With every interaction, it learns, grows, almost breathes. Yet, as we stand at this one-year threshold, we must ask: In the dance between human and machine, who leads and who follows?
There has been a common trope, when discussing AI word generation and ChatGPT, of asking the question which of these segments were written by ChatGPT/Google Bard/etc? at the beginning of the article, having the reader guess. And a marginally intelligent reader can pick up from the clues, whether it be noticing the inconsistencies in wording or plugging it into GPTZero, and deciding article paragraph 1 must be false! or the other way around.
ChatGPT was created with the intention of mechanizing the arts and artistic production. GPT 3.5 can write newspaper articles as well as academic research essays, and DALL E 3 can create paintings so vivid that they look like they’re infringed upon digital artists’ copyrights*. It has had such a profound place in society that 35% of businesses have adopted AI, and 1.5 billion individual visits in September alone.
When Chat GPT first erupted in popularity, many students, parents, and teachers around the world knew it would transform education, and we can see the constantly growing effects. Whether it be a rise in in-class handwritten essays, or a new go-to site for assignment inspiration, ChatGPT has begun to settle into society, and it looks like it’s come to stay.
